How to set a DMZ Host/Server setting

From Trixbox Pro Help

Jump to: navigation, search

When setting up remote phones, additional router/firewall settings are required in order to allow the bidirectional communication needed between the remote phone and the trixbox Pro system over the internet.

A DMZ Host (aka: DMZ Server) setting tells the router to direct all incoming connections from the Internet to the IP address specified as the DMZ Host/Server. This is similar to port forwarding, but it’s for all ports, not just a specific range.

If your router/firewall is SIP aware, it may not need this setting. If you’re able to place calls, but not receive them, you should try the DMZ Host/Server setting to resolve that.

Note that almost all routers have this capability, but the configuration steps vary. Please consult your router/firewall manual to verify the correct setup for you.

Note: Consider updating the firmware in your router to the most recent version available from the manufacturer. Many popular routers have new firmware that works much better with SIP.

Example Configuration: D-Link DI-604

  1. Open a web browser and browse to http://192.168.0.1
Log in as "admin" with no password, or with a password that you previously assigned this router.
  2. Click on the “Advanced” tab and then click on the “DMZ” link on the left.
  3. Set the feature to ‘Enabled”
  4. Set the IP address in use by your phone. If you are setting this up at your main location, then set this to the IP address used by your trixbox Pro server on your private network.
  5. Click Apply.

Example Configuration: Linksys BEFSRx1 Routers

  1. Open a web browser and browse to http://192.168.1.1
Log in as "admin" with password “admin”, or with a password that you previously assigned this router.
  2. Depending on the firmware version in your router, you may need to select ‘Advanced” then “DMZ” or ‘Applications and Gaming” and then DMZ.
  3. Set the feature to ‘Enabled”
  4. Set the IP address in use by your phone. If you are setting this up at your main location, then set this to the IP address used by your trixbox Pro server on your private network.
  5. Click “Save Settings”.
